Dear SPH-B students,
This is an important update regarding recent state legislation and its implications for academic programs at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B).
As part of the state’s 2025–2027 budget, Indiana has enacted legislation that requires universities to review certain academic programs that fall below newly defined enrollment thresholds. The legislation allows universities to request approval to continue, modify, or consolidate these programs, and more information is available through the ICHE’s FAQ on this topic.
In response, Indiana University—like other public institutions within our state—is working closely with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) to review the affected programs and determine appropriate next steps.
We want to reassure you that these changes do not indicate the quality or importance of affected programs. In fact, several of the programs included on the list are relatively new and continue to grow; they remain strong and will not be eliminated, suspended, or merged. For example: The B.S.P.H. degrees in Community Health, Epidemiology, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Environmental Health will be consolidated during 2026–27 into a single B.S.P.H. that offers concentrations in each of those four areas.
This change will streamline degree offerings while continuing to support the same academic content and faculty expertise. You will continue to receive the education and training aligned with your program’s focus area, and your degree will remain meaningful and marketable.
We understand that changes like these can raise questions, and we are committed to keeping you informed every step of the way. Please rest assured that your academic progress and degree completion will not be disrupted by this legislative change.
Thank you for being part of the SPH-B community, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to Executive Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Enrollment Dr. Michael Willett or anyone on our student support team with any questions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Jon Macy, Ph.D.
