Proudly representing SPH-B, Ph.D. student Chukwudike Igwe in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) received the 2026 Society of Toxicology (SOT) Graduate Student Travel Support Award during the society’s annual meeting in San Diego, CA at the end of March.
A graduate research assistant, during the conference Igwe presented on “Thirdhand Vape Exposures Induce Immune Dysregulation and Epigenetic Alterations in a Mouse Model.” The SOT award provided funds for Igwe’s travel expenses to connect and engage at this major scientific conference, expanding his network as well as boosting visibility.
“Receiving [the award] is both an honor and a strong affirmation of my work in environmental health research,” says Igwe. “My work focuses on understanding the health effects of thirdhand vape exposure, which refers to chemical residues that remain on indoor surfaces after e-cigarette use. Using a mouse model, I examined how these residues can influence immune responses and biological processes.”
In addition to being a presenter, Igwe has been a volunteer with SOT’s Continuing Education courses, which included providing support for coordinating the logistics for sessions, assisting attendees and ensuring smooth communication between participants and organizers.
“The experience gave me insight into how professional training sessions are structured and delivered, while also allowing me to interact with experts and professionals in the field,” says Igwe.
Looking ahead, Igwe would like to continue his research on thirdhand vape exposure by “exploring the mechanisms of exposure and translating these findings to human health, particularly in vulnerable populations.”

Igwe credits his primary advisor and EOH Assistant Professor Sarah Commodore and EOH Chair Professor Patricia Silveyra for their critical mentorship, helping him develop his research skills, critical thinking, and scientific communication to shape professional goals. Silveyra applauds Igwe, stating his recognition and meaningful participation in SOT reflects favorably on the EOH Ph.D. program overall.
Igwe adds, “Their support has helped me make the most of my time at SPH-B and prepared me for the next steps in my career.”
