Dr. Carolyn (Carly) Camplain (she/they) is a scientific and legal researcher who bridges the fields of public health, law, and criminal justice through interdisciplinary research. This research aims to transform the criminal legal system into a space that actively promotes healing and cultural values, rather than perpetuating harm—turning it into what can truly be called a "criminal justice system." While Dr. Camplain collaborates with various justice-involved populations, her primary focus is on Indigenous people, Native Nations, and correctional facilities in Indian Country (tribal jails).

Her research and advocacy centers Indigenous ways of knowing, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks. This work seeks to prioritize Indigenous culture, traditions, and community needs, ensuring these elements are central to both the research process and its outcomes.

Dr. Camplain is also committed to producing adaptable research, moving away from traditional notions of generalizability in favor of approaches that can be customized to meet the unique needs of different communities. Her goal is to create sustainable partnerships and programs that lead to actual improved health, wellbeing, and justice for people who encounter the criminal legal system.

She is also committed to providing opportunities for safe, fulfilling research experiences for undergraduate, masters, and PhD students.
