Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Improving public health in Indiana and beyond

The nation's growing aging population has increased the need for scientists skilled in the research and prevention of disease. So has the global need for researchers capable of helping governments, health agencies, healthcare providers, and communities as they deal with epidemics.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics studies the distribution and patterns of health events and provides statistical methodology on topics in human health. These two fields of study are the cornerstone of public health research and practice that provide students with the foundation for a variety of promising careers in academia, industry, and government.

Our distinguished faculty conducts excellent research on a broad range of health outcomes and exposures and is fully committed to helping students become leaders in the field. As a department, our funded research projects and publications are extensive, covering topics from social, structural, and economic influences of HIV risk in young South African women to inquiries into whether walking pace may predict the risks of cognitive decline and dementia in elderly populations.

The Biostatistics Consulting Center provides study design and data analysis for health-related research. Our professional biostatisticians are available for collaborating on research projects through grant-funded research or hourly billing.
