How to get started with SPH-B study abroad programs

The application process for study abroad opportunities through the School of Public Health-Bloomington Office of International Affairs may vary depending on the program type and your IU home campus. However, most students will follow these general steps:

1. Explore programs offered through SPH-B by visiting our program portal: https://abroad-iu.via-trm.com/authV2/welcome.
2. Meet with your academic advisor to discuss how a study abroad experience can fit into your degree plan.
3. Have questions about a program or funding? Reach out to the SPH-B Office of International Affairs team at [Insert contact email] to connect with an advisor.
4. Apply online through the portal. Note that application deadlines vary by program.
5. Submit a scholarship application if you're interested in being considered for financial support (optional).
6. Confirm your spot by submitting your acceptance materials once admitted.

Real Madrid – Universidad Europea (Madrid, Spain)

This unique semester exchange opportunity allows SPH-B students to study sport management, health, and wellness at the prestigious Real Madrid  – Universidad Europea in Madrid. Students take English-taught courses alongside international peers and gain access to exclusive academic and cultural programming tied to Real Madrid C.F., one of the world’s most iconic sports organizations. This program offers a dynamic blend of classroom learning, global networking, and hands-on insight into the international sports industry. This program is open only to Sport Marketing and Management majors.

The SPH-B Office of International Affairs is actively developing new semester exchange opportunities, including:

• Kabarak University (Kenya)
• Kenyatta University (Kenya)
• Split University (Croatia)

While these SPH-B-specific programs are in progress, students are encouraged to explore over 250+ study abroad programs offered through IU Education Abroad, many of which are open to SPH-B students. Visit https://abroad.iu.edu to search available options.

Considering a non-SPH Program? Please note:

Our office is unable to provide advising for programs outside of SPH-B. For non-SPH-B programs, contact IU Education Abroad directly.

Steps to take for your non-SPH-B overseas experience

1. Meet with your SPH-B academic advisor before registering for any international experience that is not sponsored by the SPH-B Office of International Affairs. Your advisor will help you understand how non-SPH-B study abroad credits may transfer and ensure the experience aligns with your degree requirements and academic plan.
2. Once you have a general idea of how a non-SPH-B study abroad program can work into your plans, head to the Education Abroad office to learn more about programs that best suit your interests.
3. After you select a program, you may want to visit your SPH-B academic advisor for a second time in your study abroad planning, this time for help in selecting overseas courses.

If your courses are not on the approved list, you will need to submit the course for approval, by clicking here: Course Approval Form. Please complete the step before going abroad.
