Dear SPH-B Faculty, Staff, and Postdoctoral Fellows:
We are pleased to share that Dr. Ellen Evans will join SPH-B on Monday, August 1 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology, pending completion of a successful tenure review and approval by campus. An outstanding researcher, teacher, and academic administrator with close to 25 years of experience in higher education, her arrival in SPH-B is an important step toward greater representation in our leadership ranks—and an opportunity for Dr. Evans to continue her commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Dr. David Koceja will continue to serve as a professor in the Department of Kinesiology as he did—brilliantly—for more than 13 years. True to his kind and gracious reputation, Dr. Koceja has pledged to support Dr. Evans as she takes on the role.
Dr. Evans is a Professor of Kinesiology and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education at the Early College of Education, University of Georgia, Athens. Prior to her time at UGA, she was an Associate Professor of Kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she also led the Bone and Body Composition Laboratory and Lifetime Fitness Program.
An accomplished scholar with a research focus on the intersection of physical fitness, nutrition, and aging, she has co-authored:
• Three textbooks, including a forthcoming one with SPH-B Professor Catherine Sherwood-Laughlin and Teaching Professor Emeritus Carol Kennedy-Armbruster;
• Five invited book chapters; and
• More than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles.
Dr. Evans has consistently received extramural funding as PI or co-PI from a variety of sources including the NIH, USDA, and multiple private industry and foundation organizations. She is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, The Obesity Society, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Her wealth of experience includes having mentored more than 30 postdoctoral research associates, visiting scholars, and graduate students.
We are thrilled that Dr. Evans joins us during a time of profound growth in the School of Public Health-Bloomington, both in teaching and research. Please join us in helping her feel welcome!
Sincerely,
David B. Allison, Ph.D.
