The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Kan Shao was recently named a Fellow of the prestigious Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS). The distinction was granted, according to the organization, "following a thorough review of his scientific credentials by his peers."

"I am truly honored to join the Academy of Toxicological Sciences," says Dr. Shao. "This is a comprehensive recognition of my past contributions to the development of toxicology and a motivation and encouragement for my future research in computational toxicology."
A dedicated researcher of chemical safety regulation, Dr. Shao has a special interest in using modeling methodologies to improve quantitative dose-response and risk assessment. In addition to receiving the 2022 AACT JOINN Biomere Outstanding Young Toxicologist Award, he earned federal funding for a multi-phase initiative focused on establishing and advancing dose-response modeling systems to integrate toxicological, epidemiological, and genomic dose-response data to improve the scientific rigor and reliability of safe dose estimation to support regulatory decision-making. He was also the 2021 recipient of the Carnegie Mellon Civil and Environmental Engineering Recent Alumnus Achievement Award.

Dr. Shao will be recognized as a new Fellow at next month’s ATS Annual Business Meeting and Reception in Orlando. This honor places him among "the most prestigious group of scientists in toxicology," according to SPH-B Executive Associate Dean NiCole Keith.
ATS was created more than 40 years ago to ensure that toxicity data are regularly and rigorously reviewed by toxicology professionals, so that practitioners and the public have reliable information about the safety—or danger—of chemical substances. There are fewer than 200 scientists worldwide who have been named Fellows of the organization, which describes itself as "the leading international organization that certifies toxicologists by peer review of education, professional experience, leadership, demonstrated achievement and scientific expertise."
