A full-time environmental investigator for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the founder of the Girls, Inc. of Monroe County, Indiana annual Science Fest, Alford is dedicated to promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to young girls—thanks in large part to the continued encouragement and support of her faculty mentor Patricia Silveyra, Ph.D., chair of the SPH-B Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.

Each year, the Indiana University-Bloomington Center of Excellence for Women & Technology (CEWIT) hosts a campus-wide Women’s Research Poster Competition open to both graduate and undergraduate students whose research overlaps with technology. Sophomore Nithya Murthy, who has for the past year worked in the Jordan Lab as part of the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) Department of Health & Wellness, earned the First Place Outstanding Research Award in the category of Health and Behavioral Sciences for her poster entitled, "Impact of Mild Cognitive Impairment Subtypes on the Geospatial Movement of Seniors."
A family affair: Father/daughter duo graduate from IU in the same weekend
For SPH-B undergraduate student and long-time Hoosier Reginald “Reggie” Johnson, nothing is more important than family. And at this week's Indiana University Commencement—on his 45th birthday—he will become the first person on his side of the family to graduate from college, earning his bachelor of science in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. That same weekend, his daughter Liv Clements will graduate with her bachelor of arts in from IU's The Media School.
